I'd also like to second the question as to whether you've renamed your home folder. Is it happening in anything else or just desktop background and Safari? If you haven't done anything in this account yet as far as moving data and setting things up, I might try adding a test admin account, logging into it, and seeing if things work any differently. Often problems occur when the OS has conflict with third party programs. Check in System Preferences> Accounts to make sure the other users were properly deleted. The accounts would not have automatically been deleted when you created your account. If you go to Help in the Finder Menu search for "Deleting a user account" to see how this was supposed to work. I was thinking display model that might have been setup in Kiosk mode ( limited access) or a Mac with other accounts on it. The symptoms sounded like this wasn't a brand new factory installation. That is why I was asking about the setup.
